Shaker casework is emblematic of simplicity, utility, and harmony—formative principles of Shaker design. Mimicking Shaker built-in furniture, this freestanding Cupboard Over Drawers is a fine example of cabinetmaking from New Lebanon, New York.
The Cupboard Over Drawers features paneled cabinet doors and sides, dovetailed drawers with molded drawer fronts, quarter-round top molding, and lamb’s tongue chamfering on the medial molding. Early-19th-century brass latch work was applied by the Shakers. The cut feet, which are a signature design of the New Lebanon Shakers, are uniquely reinforced, making this a well-supported and beautifully proportioned case piece.
An original paper label printed with the numeral “14” is adhered to the underside of the case.
