Red Shaker Oval Storage Box
New Lebanon, NY | c. 1840-1850
Maple, pine, and copper with silk lining
Old painted surface
4 ⅞” h. x 12” w. x 8 ⅜” d.
Provenance: Watt & Jan White, Stamford, CT
A large example of a New Lebanon Oval Storage Box retaining an old opaque red painted surface. The base has three, arched, sharply tapering lappers fixed with aligned copper tacks. The single lapper on the lid has less gothic articulation and is slightly justified to the left, creating a visually interesting variation from the classic New Lebanon form.
The Box is in a good state of preservation. The interior of the box retains an original silk lining that has been damaged by mold.
