Shaker Sister’s Hemming Stand
Canterbury, NH | c. 1860
Pine and hardwood
19th-century orange-painted surface
8″ h. x 26 ⅛” w. x 15 ¾” d.
Provenance: Robert & Hazel Belfit, Watertown, CT
This Shaker Stand used in the Sisters’ workshop for hemming is inscribed on the underside:
” Shaker Stand Canterbury, NH, Sister Elam”
Sister Aida Elam (1883-1962) was among the last Sisters in the Canterbury Shaker community.
Condition note: the number “37” on the interior of the top drawer in black Sharpie marker was written in the 1980s by Robert “Bob” Belfit Jr. as part of an inventory of his parents’ collection. Though this may be considered a misstep today, Bob’s efforts preserved much of the information related to the provenance of the Robert & Hazel Belfit Shaker Collection and we are indebted to his work.
