AIM | Belfit Lignum Vitae Mallet

Shaker Lignum Vitae Mallet

Mount Lebanon, NY | c. 1860

Ironwood with ash or hickory handle
Original surface
13 ¾” h. x 4 ⅞” w. x 3 ⅛” d.

Provenance: Robert & Hazel Belfit, Watertown, CT

Created from one of the hardest and heaviest woods in the world, this Lignum Vitae Mallet was used to compress seams in the Mount Lebanon Sisters’ Shop.

Condition note: the number “25” in black Sharpie marker was written in the 1980s by Robert “Bob” Belfit Jr. as part of an inventory of his parents’ collection. Though this may be considered a misstep today, Bob’s efforts preserved much of the information related to the provenance of the Robert & Hazel Belfit Shaker Collection and we are indebted to his work.
