9 ⅛” h. x 14 ¾” w. x 10 ⅝” d.

Provenance: A prominent Connecticut collector

The evolution from oval storage box to handled carrier didn’t take long to manifest. In the 19th century, the Shakers of New Lebanon, New York, began making handled carriers, but these handy objects never accrued enough demand to develop into a full-fledged industry. Oval carriers came in a wide variety of sizes, from about five to fifteen inches long. Most are about nine to twelve inches, making this Carrier an exceptionally large example.

Examining the form, shaping, and exactitude of the three swallowtail lappers, we opine that this Carrier was made in the workshop of Elder Daniel Crossman (1810-1885), a master oval box maker for the New Lebanon community. Note the position of each copper tack securing the bentwood ash handle to the interior of the oval—the precision is striking.

In its original chrome yellow painted finish, this Carrier is in an exemplary state of preservation.
