Shaker “Dressmakers Shop” Opposing Drawer Sewing Table

New Lebanon, NY | c. 1850

Butternut, cherry, and brass
Old refinished surface
26 ⅜” h. x 32 ⅞” w. x 23 ¾” d.

Inscribed on the underside, “Dressmakers Shop,” this unique, Opposing Drawer Sewing Table was put to use in a New Lebanon Sisters’ shop. The piece is comprised of a butternut single-board top with tray molding, a cherry skirt with two flush-front, dovetailed drawers, and square tapering legs. The surface is an old, most likely Shaker stain and varnish refinish over traces of gray paint and dark varnish. Shadows from two pairs of scissors are embossed on the top of the Sewing Table—further evidence of its use (and subsequent disuse). In an excellent state of preservation.
