Shaker Commode

Probably New Lebanon, NY | c. 1830

Pine, hardwood, brass, iron
Original painted surface
16 ¾ h. x 18 w. x 16 ¼ d. inches

“Beauty rests on utility” is a renowned tenet of Shaker design. Few objects speak to this ideal in practice more clearly than a commode, which finds charm in the most basic of functional furniture forms.

Created by New Lebanon Bishopric, this Commode is distinguished by its dovetailed case and the addition of a drawer, which is also finely dovetailed and has beading around the fascia. It is a sweet work of Shaker craft that, at just shy of seventeen inches in height, can be used as a discreet surface and storage. In an excellent state of preservation with its original yellow-painted surface.
