Provenance: John Roberts, Shaker Farm, Canaan, NY
A classic Shaker Drop Leaf Work Table from the New Lebanon Bishopric with cherry square tapering legs, top, and skirt ends, and poplar skirt sides, all in its original stain and varnish surface. The skirt is morticed into the legs and secured without wooden pins. Pins are also absent from the tabletop—screw pockets adhere the skirt to the work surface. Boxed pull-out supports elevate the two leaves, which are united with the tabletop via fine rule joints. Clamp marks indent the underside of the work surface—evidence of Shaker use.
The Table comes from the collection of John Roberts, an early collector of Shaker material who, in 1931, purchased and restored Shaker Farm on the site of the Canaan, New York, Shaker community.
