Natural Shaker Oval Storage Box – SOLD
Maine Bishopric | c. 1880
Maple, pine, butternut, and copper
Original varnish surface
2 ¼” h. x 6” w. x 4” d.
Provenance: Watt & Jan White, Stamford, CT
A left-handed Shaker Oval Storage Box in original varnish surface made by the Shakers of Alfred or Sabbathday Lake, Maine. While the configuration of wood used for the sides and base is traditional—maple and pine, the top of the Box is created from butternut. Another unusual detail is the slight rounding to the tips of the two gothic-arched fingers on the base and the single finger on the lid. A unique example of Maine craftsmanship, this box is in a fine state of preservation with minuscule hairline cracks at the tacking points on either side of the lid.
