Green Shaker Round Storage Box – SOLD
Probably Alfred, ME | c. 1850
Maple, pine, copper, and iron
Old or original painted surface
3 ¾” h. x 6 ⅝” dia.
Provenance: Watt & Jan White, Stamford, CT
The majority of Shaker-made pantry boxes are oval in shape, so a round Shaker box is a rarity, indeed. This Round Storage Box from the Maine Bishopric retains an old or original dark green painted surface. With three left-handed fingers on the base and one on the lid fixed with copper rivets and iron brads, this Box is in a very fine state of preservation.
This box resembles another Round Storage Box with an original varnish surface from the Collection of Watt & Janet White. Note the similarity in the shape and tacking of the swallowtail lappers, which suggests the two boxes may have been made in the same workshop or possibly by the same hand.
