Blue Shaker Oval Storage Box – SOLD
Probably Maine Bishopric | 19th c.
Maple, pine, and copper
Original painted surface
2 ¾“ h. x 7 ⅞” w. x 5 ⅜” d.
Provenance: Watt & Jan White, Stamford, CT
A striking, Ministry blue Oval Storage Box retaining its original thinly painted surface. With two left-handed lappers on the base and a single lapper on the lid fastened with copper rivets and wooden pins, the Box resembles others from northern New England—particularly the Maine Bishopric. Even though the lappers are not in alignment, the copper rivets were tacked in a neat row. The walls of the Box are of thicker stock, a characteristic of boxes made in Alfred or Sabbathday Lake. In an excellent state of preservation.
