Two-Drawer Shaker Desk Box – SOLD

Mount Lebanon, NY | c. 1860

Pine with hardwood pulls
Original bittersweet stain and varnish surface
5″ h. x 18 ¾” w. x 14 ⅞” d.

Provenance: Robert & Hazel Belfit, Watertown, CT

An exquisitely crafted, portable Shaker Desk Box from the New Lebanon community made from white pine with a dovetailed case and two dovetailed drawers. The top drawer is divided into three compartments—the front compartment retains the remains of an original paper lining. Each drawer has a finely-turned hardwood pull. The Desk is an original bittersweet stain and varnish surface.

A comparable example is in the collection of Shaker Museum Chatham (1954.6861.1)

Condition note: the number “58” on the interior of the top drawer in black Sharpie marker was written in the 1980s by Robert “Bob” Belfit Jr. as part of an inventory of his parents’ collection. Though this may be considered a misstep today, Bob’s efforts preserved much of the information related to the provenance of the Robert & Hazel Belfit Shaker Collection and we are indebted to his work.
