SOLD | Shaker Oval Storage Box – White 025

Shaker Oval Storage Box collected by Edward & Faith Andrews – SOLD

New Lebanon, NY | c. 1820-1830

Maple, pine, and copper with handwritten paper label
Original stained surface
4“ h. x 9” w. x 6 ⅛” d.

Provenance:
Dr. Edward Deming & Faith Andrews, Richmond, MA
Watt & Jan White, Stamford, CT

An exceptional Shaker Oval Storage Box in its original stained surface, with three symmetrically cut and spaced lappers on the base and a single lapper on the lid. Fixed with neat rows of copper rivets, the lappers are in near-perfect alignment oriented towards the right of the Box with vertical scribe lines still visible on the side.

Of an unusually tall height, this Box is an earlier example made before New Lebanon standardized the process and oval box making became a full-fledged Second Family industry. An original paper label on the lid of the box reads: “Rottonstone.” Rottonstone was commonly used in the polishing of finishes, so we opine that this box was made for use in the Brethren’s Shop.

A second paper label on the underside of the Box connects the piece to its first collectors: “ANDREWS.” Dr. Edward Deming and Faith Andrews had many Shaker Oval Storage Boxes in their collection. In an inventory dated August 12, 1932, they recorded 73 boxes in their possession.

In an excellent state of preservation.
