This diminutive Shaker Oval Storage Box is compelling for several reasons. It is of classic construction with two gothic arched fingers on the base and a single arch on the lid, all fixed with copper rivets and iron brads. The fingers are left-handed, aligned perfectly, and right-justified—a curious aesthetic decision. Also, the old or original painted surface is two-tone: dark green with an overcoat of black stripes on the lid and rims of the base. There is some precedent for this style. Three, New Lebanon-made two-tone boxes in black and red are in the collection of Hancock Shaker Village (Pittsfield, MA).
This Box is in a very fine state of preservation with minor surface losses.
