WW | Shaker Oval Storage Box – White 018

Flame Birch Shaker Oval Storage Box

Probably Alfred, ME | c. 1860

Flame birch, maple, pine, copper, and iron
Old or original varnish surface
3 ⅛ “h. x 9” w. x 6 ¼” d.

Provenance: Watt & Jan White, Stamford, CT

An outstanding example of an Oval Storage Box with a visually striking flame birch top. With three, left-handed swallowtails on the base and a single swallowtail on the lid—all in alignment slightly justified to the right, this Box exemplifies the exceptional craftsmanship of the Maine Shakers. The ends of each lapper are clipped with 45-degree bevels, a characteristic of boxes made in the mid-nineteenth century in Alfred or Sabbathday Lake. The Box is in an excellent state of preservation, retaining an old or original varnish surface.
